Artist Statement

 

What is the meaning of wearing? Is it just an action of placing an object on the body?

Wearing ornaments have various meanings from an ordinary definition like a decoration for body to a method of expressing one’s inner side. For this, what is the correlation between an ornament and body when it comes to wearing it? There is a mutual interaction between these two and they supplement each other. In other words, an ornament does not fulfill its meaning of existence, if not worn, and the body without ornaments is not effective in delivering expressions.

I propose a new method of wearing, “Wrapping and Tying,” to make the relationship between human body and ornament more intimate; not only the physical distance between them but also the meaning and value become closer to each other. Instead of a traditional method of wearing such as pin-back and clasp, it is a direct application on the body through the repetition of simple wrapping and tying, which brings out an emotional exchange between the body and ornament, and promotes the participation of wearer while the shape is being completed by the person’s own hands. Then, this becomes an emotional tool that allows the communication among the artist, wearer and ornament.

It may seem that “Wrapping” is an analog way and step back in the current fast-paced and convenient world where a click can do virtually everything. However, a hand-written letter is more sincere than an e-mail, a paper book delivers deeper emotions than an e-book, and listening to LP with others is more impressive than listening alone through the earphones of an MP3 player. Even though modern technology has advantages, we miss objects from the analog era probably because they feel warm. I wish my ornaments to communicate with people by walking slow in the fast world.

 

우리가 무엇인가를 착용한다는 것은 어떤 의미일까? 그것이 단지 몸에 걸치는 행위로만 의미하는 것일까?

장신구의 착용은 몸을 치장하는 일반적인 의미에서부터 인간의 내면을 표면화 하는 수단으로까지 다양한 의미로써 존재한다. 그렇다면 장신구를 신체에 착용함에 있어, 장신구와 신체, 이들의 관계는 어떠한가? 이들은 상호작용을  하면서 서로 존재한다. 다시 말해, 장신구는 신체에 착용되지 않으면 장신구 로써의 온전한 의미를 다하지 못하며, 신체에 장신구를 착용하지 않으면 표현하고자하는 것을 나타내기 어렵다.

나는 사람의 몸과 장신구, 이 둘의 눈에 보이는 거리만이 아닌 그 의미와 가치의 거리를 조금 더 Intimate(긴밀하게)하게 만들기 위해 “Wrapping and Tying”이라는 새로운 착용방식을 제시한다. 핀백이나, Clasp(걸쇠)등을 통한 착용방법이 아닌, 두르고 묶는 단순한 행동의 반복을 통하여 직접적으로 몸에 착용하는 방식으로, 착용하는 과정에서 장신구와 신체 간의 감성적 교류를 이끌어 내고, 두르면서 모양을 만들어 나가는 과정을 통하여 착용하는 자의 참여를 이끌어 낸다. 이는 만드는이, 착용 하는 자, 장신구의 선을 넘어 모두가 서로 커뮤니케이션 하는 감성의 도구로서 존재한다.

‘클릭’ 하나면 모든것이 해결되는 편리하고 빠른 세상속에서, ‘Wrapping’이라는 아날로그적인 착용방식을 이야기 하는것이 시대를 거꾸로 가는 것 같지만, 이메일 보다는 손으로 쓴 편지가 더 귀하게 느껴지고, 전자책 보다는 손으로 한장 한장 넘기면서 보는 종이책이 더 진한 감동을 주며, 이어폰을 꼽고 혼자 듣는 음악보다는 LP판에서 흘러나오는 음악을 여럿이 감상하는 여운이 더 크게 남는것 처럼, 많은 장점이 있음에도 불구하고 아날로그 감성이 더 그리운것은  사람냄새가 난다고 느껴지기 때문일 것이다. 이처럼 빠른 세상속에서 느리게 걸으며 사람과 소통하는 장신구 이기를 바란다.
